Introduction

Department of Soil Science, Faculty of Agriculture, Universitas Gadjah Mada always achieve “A accreditation” based on Badan Akreditasi Nasional (BAN) which is valid until 2018. Department of Soil Science has been developed by the founders of Faculty Agriculture since on early establishment. “Pergoeroean Tinggi Pertanian” in Klaten and “Akademi Pertanian” in Yogyakarta were officially established by “Kementrian Kemakmoeran Repoeblik Indonesia” on September 27th 1946. Futhermore, its date becomes as Agriculture Faculty Universitas Gadjah Mada Anniversary and it is celebrated every year until now. Government of The Republic of Indonesia legitimated the establishment of Universitit Gadjah Mada under Kementrian Pendidikan Pengajaran dan Kebudayaan, including Fakultit Pertanian on December 19th 1949. As instructed by by pasal 3 Peraturan Pemerintah Nomor 37 Tahun 1950 about Universitat Gadjah Mada, our former Dean of Faculty of Agriculture, Prof. Ir. Harjono Danusastro  formed sections and departments. One of the departments is Department of Soils and Fertilizer with Prof. Ir Koesnoto Setyodiwirjo as a pioneer person. Faculty of Agriculture developed 2 sections starting from 1963/1964, namely Agriculture Section and Fishery Section. Department of Soil and Fertilizer was included in Agriculture Section. In 1972, Department of Soil and Fertilizer had been changed to be Department of Soil Science. It composed of 5 specializations including Soil Physics, Soil Chemistry and Fertility, Pedology, Soil and Water Management, and Agrometeorology. In 1984, based on Keputusan Menteri Pendidikan dan Kebudayaan RI (the Ministry of Education and Culture) Number 0553/0/1983, the term of institution “Departemen” was reorganized to “Jurusan”, followed by conversion of institution’s name become “Jurusan Tanah”. The Department developed a Study Program of Soil Science in 1986 based on the Ministry of Education and Culture No. 22 / DIKTI / Kep / 85 and the Director General of Higher Education No. 221 / DIKTI / Kep / 1996 which is a follow up of the development of the National Curriculum (Decree of the Ministry of Education and Culture No. 0331 / U / 1994). Starting from 2015, Name “Jurusan” changes to be “Departemen”.

Vision
The Vision of The Department of Soil Science is to become the excellent department that has capability to produce high quality human resources that also has the ability to solve soil management problems with environmentally conception in preserving natural resources by improving science and technology. The Department of Soil Science is managed to be a soil science institution of higher education based on research that to be oriented on interest of the nation and welfare of society based on Pancasila.

Mision

  1. Organize education (under graduate, master, and doctor program) in the field of soil science based on research which is able to identify problems, and be able to look for method to accomplishes it based on principles of soil management and land sustainability.
  2. Create sustainable strategic research based on region potential to solve the problems of agriculture sector with development science and technology.
  3. Implement service and dedication to society with structured and integrated program for society empowerment.
  4. Develope the perceptive institution towards development of science and technology, government regulation, and society necessary.

Purposes

  1. Be able to develop the science and technology that related to soil management as the land element in supporting human life necessities.
  2. Create the graduate that is able consistently study and enhance theirself to continue to the higher level of science in master (S2) and doctor (S3) programe.
  3. Be always perceptive to farmers society interest at present and the agriculture problem on the around environment.
  4. Participate in the land planning and development for the various purposes allocation of usage.

Targets

Targets of education field are :

  1. Achieved students input with satisfied quantity and quality.
  2. Implemented high quality learning process.
  3. Implemented optimal education administration.
  4. Created conducive academic atmosphere for scientific activity.
  5. Achieved excellent student personality
  6. Programmed the development of graduate quality.

Targets of research field are :

  1. To be trend setter reserach in field of soil and environmental science
  2. And established effective communication and collaboration in the research field with other researh institute.

Targets of service and dedication field are :

  1. Become the source of information and service in the professional soil management field.
Implemented thematic and emergency service and dedication to the society.
